Cost of Injector Reconditioning – What Expenses Should You Expect?

Injectors are crucial components of every internal combustion engine. Whether we’re talking about a gasoline or diesel engine, injectors are responsible for fuel dosing – they deliver it to the cylinders, where it is subsequently combusted. Therefore, when they don’t function properly, the engine – and consequently the vehicle – suffers. Once we recognize the symptoms of faulty or damaged injectors, we should consider either cleaning them, which can be done on our own, or complete reconditioning, which is carried out by a professional auto repair shop. Today, I’ll discuss the latter option, specifically the cost of such a service. How much does injector reconditioning for gasoline and diesel engines cost? What factors affect the price of this service?

Injector Reconditioning – A Last Resort Before Buying New Injectors

Reconditioning is a process of restoring injectors that have degraded or been damaged, meaning they have lost their original properties due to wear or malfunction. During this operation, the injectors undergo diagnostics focused on assessing their condition and identifying the causes of their improper functioning. Additionally, the injectors are cleaned of contaminants, which in excess can lead to blockages. The reconditioning service also includes the replacement of damaged parts, calibration, and performance testing.

Reconditioning gasoline and diesel injectors is a good and more affordable alternative to purchasing new parts, although it’s not always feasible – if the injectors are completely damaged, repair will not be possible.

How Much Does Injector Reconditioning Cost? It Depends

Let’s get to the core of today’s topic: the cost of injector reconditioning. At this point, I must add that it’s difficult to provide a definitive answer, as the price of this service depends on several factors, which I’ll discuss below.

The Cost of Reconditioning and the Extent of Damage

The first factor affecting the total cost of reconditioning and diagnosing injectors is the scope of the service. This, in turn, depends on the degree of wear on the injectors. If it’s necessary to replace individual parts with new ones (such as seals or mechanical components), the total cost will naturally be higher than if the service only involves diagnostics, cleaning, and calibration.

Cost of Injector Repair Based on Car Model

The cost of injector reconditioning can vary depending on the car model. For popular brands like Audi or Volkswagen, the repair typically ranges from $50 to $130  per injector.

Vehicle Age

The age of the car also significantly influences the total price of injector reconditioning. For example, older gasoline systems are relatively simple to repair, which makes the labor cost quite affordable. On the other hand, newer vehicles use modern solutions, such as piezoelectric injectors, which are far more expensive to repair than their traditional counterparts.

Injector Reconditioning – Cost. The Type of Injector Also Matters

This issue ties into what I mentioned earlier – some injectors have more complex designs, making their reconditioning more time-consuming and, consequently, more expensive. The type of injector you are dealing with has a significant impact on how much you’ll pay. A good example is Common Rail injectors used in diesel engines, where reconditioning is often much more expensive than for gasoline engines with direct fuel injection. For gasoline engines, the cost is around 50 PLN per injector, whereas for diesels, it can reach up to 500 PLN. The cost of reconditioning the injection pump alone in a diesel engine can go up to $520.

Individual Pricing for Reconditioning at Auto Repair Shops

Each auto repair shop has its own pricing for diagnostics and injector reconditioning. Therefore, depending on where you go, you might face either a lower or higher expense.

Reconditioning Is Not Always Necessary: The Role of Preventive Injector Maintenance Using Cleaning Products

Now that you have a rough idea of the cost of injector inspection and reconditioning, I’d like to emphasize that such a procedure isn’t always necessary. Why? Before assuming there's a malfunction, it's worth checking whether the injectors in your car are simply clogged. This issue, as I mentioned earlier, stems from an excess of contaminants accumulating inside the injection system. That’s why opting for injector cleaning is a good alternative, and it can even be done at home, for example, in your garage. How can this be done? It’s simple – you need to equip yourself with the right cleaning agent and hoses to inject the cleaner into the system. Using high-quality products will help keep your injectors in good condition for longer and can significantly delay the need for reconditioning, reducing the risk of failure.

What should you use? At this point, I recommend TEC 2000 products:
