These may be sounds, smells or unusual car behaviour that at first glance has nothing to do with the cooling system at all.   • a quiet, metallic sound from under the hood – especially at low revs or on a cold engine,
  • the characteristic smell of coolant, which appears inside the car or under the hood,

  • heating that works selectively, warming up well one time and blowing barely lukewarm air the next,
  • small but regular coolant losses, with no visible leaks.

Many drivers ignore these signs, blaming the weather, the fuel, the cabin filter or “the car's general old age”. Meanwhile, even a drop of a few per cent in pump efficiency can affect coolant flow enough that the engine stops running at its optimal temperature. How do you check whether the water pump is working or faulty?

You can't just “take a look” at a water pump or pull it out in 3 minutes, but there are concrete ways to assess its condition yourself – or at least to be sure it's worth driving to a mechanic. An initial diagnosis can be made without specialist equipment, based on a few simple signals you can observe under the hood and while driving.

What should you pay attention to?

  • Engine temperature behaviour – does it reach operating temperature in a normal amount of time? Does it fluctuate?
